The skies darkened as storm clouds gathered over the Chateau de la Commanderie; a stunning thirteenth century chateau in Cathar Country in the South West of France. Instead of the anticipated summer sunshine bathing fields of open, smiling sunflowers, the landscape was blanketed in low light and heavy, brooding storm clouds threatened. It wasn’t long before torrents of heavy summer rain began to envelop the landscape.
Despite the potential for anxiety, the sounds of enthusiastic laughter, conversation and hilarity drifted through the historic hallway as I made my way inside. I knew at once, this would be a memorable wedding.
A close-knit group of family and friends celebrated as torrential rain drenched the grounds; nothing could dampen the mood and excitement of this couple in love. Supported by family and friends, the scene was set; every element lovingly styled, crafted and contributed by a circle of loved ones, eager to celebrate the occasion. The optimism and joy was palpable. It was as if with it, the rain brought torrents of blessings as this couple and their loved ones relaxed into the day, un-phased by the unexpected conditions.
The low light darkened hallways and the torrential rain meant there was little chance to shoot our planned shots in the fields. With a quick consultation with the couple on how we could make the most of the unexpected conditions, I set to work, subtly capturing the mood and happiness before us. Inspired by the creative opportunity of this stunning chateau location, I used the diffused light gently bathing the window surrounds to create a visual feast of romantic and intimate interior shots, capturing some of my favourite images of all time.
The overwhelming mood of love, happiness and joy pervades all the imagery captured; softly lit intimate scenes within the chateau interiors as the rain poured down outside, enchanting glimpses of gardens captured during weather breaks, and post-ceremony celebrations enjoyed into the night under a canopy warmly illuminated by candles, festoon lights and lanterns.
At times on wedding days- as in life, challenges can be blessings in disguise. Though the inclement weather meant we deviated from many of our planned outdoor shots, Hannah and Will’s mood of love and relaxed joy permeated from all, and allowed us to capture their authentic love story in all it’s dreamy, amorous glory. A special romance celebrated with joy, love and fervour amongst the torrents of rain…
